Windows Server Remote Desktop License Cracking
History: I started my current position in April and I was able to access all servers using Remote Desktop. I have two servers running Windows Server 2016 and the other four are running Windows Server 2008. I did not know that Windows Server 2016 requires Remote Desktop Licenses Server to be installed until now. I am unable to access this server at this time. Problem: One of my servers running Windows Server 2016 has passed the grace period but this server is also running AD. On the other server I have installed Remote Desktop Licenses Server Role. I found in a technet forum that Remote Desktop Licenses Server cannot be installed on a server running AD.
Question: How do I point my server to the Remote Desktop License Server? Bryan6330 wrote: Thank you all for the quick response, I will take a look at the link you provided. You do not need the RDS role to use these. RDS is for users connecting to either remote apps or session-based desktops. You have a couple options license RDS or remove RDS and go back to using the two built-in sessions for administration.
The license server must be activated to issue RD CALs. 2.1 Click Start → Administrative Tools → Remote Desktop Services → Remote Desktop Licensing Manager. 2.2 Right click the server name, and choose Activate Server. 2.3 Click Next. 2.4 Choose desired connection method. I’m choosing Automatic connection, which connects to the Microsoft clearinghouse over the internet, by using https (port 443 obviously). The license server, open Remote Desktop Licensing Manager. Didn't want to go using keys to activate or setup a licensing server (purely a PoC. The first step is to install the Remote Desktop Services License Services. If this is for internal use then you don't really need a gateway. Just go into the computer properties and remote settings, allow connections using Network Level Authentication. You can set it up as a session host and a license server (per user cal licenses). File server properties are set by default in Server 2016. So you will be able to connect to local share folders ect after you join to the domain. If you are allowing people to connect from outside your network I would suggest setting it up with Remote Gateway, RD License, RD Session host. All of these have to be configured but that would allow you to have people connect remotely and securely through the gateway.
You will have to install a certificate on the server also. Hope this helps. Thank you all for the quick response, I will take a look at the link you provided. BryanThat indicates that you have the RDS Role installed which doesn't need to be unless you are using RDS Services for users. You still have the 2 connections available for administrative purposes.
